Of formal gold exports from ASM sector

The artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector in East Africa is one of the most significant contributors to gold production on the continent, yet it remains largely under-documented. the Nakodok border zone, where Kanyagot Artisanal Mining operates, sits on one of the most promising gold-bearing geological formations in the region.

Despite high potential, formal export compliance remains low across the sector - creating both a challenge and an opportunity. Licensed operators with robust chain-of-custody systems are increasingly valued by international buyers who must satisfy Dodd-Frank, LBMA, and EU due diligence requirements.

Kanyagot is positioned at the intersection of compliant supply and international demand - bridging the gap between responsible ASM miners and verified global buyers.

Kenya's Mining Act 2016 expanded licensed ASM activity, creating new opportunities for formalisation
Growing demand for certified conflict-free gold from European and Middle Eastern refineries
Uganda's 3T minerals belt (coltan, tin, wolfram) remains under-exploited relative to DRC
Rising gold prices in 2024-2025 have increased ASM production activity across the Turkana belt
Mercury-free processing mandates are reshaping best practices across the sector

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions from buyers, traders, and mining partners considering working with us.
What purity is your gold and how is it verified?
We supply doré bars assayed at 99.5%+ purity. Every batch is independently verified by an accredited fire assay laboratory before shipment. You receive the full assay certificate - including elemental composition - prior to payment and dispatch.
How do you certify that your minerals are conflict-free?
Our process aligns with OECD Due Diligence Guidance. We maintain GPS-verified origin records, named miner documentation, and site licensing for every batch. For 3T minerals, we follow ICGLR RCM requirements. Full documentation is provided with every shipment.
What is the minimum order quantity for gold?
Our minimum order is 1 kilogram of gold doré. We accommodate both spot purchases and long-term offtake agreements. Contact us to discuss your volume requirements - we will structure the right arrangement for your procurement schedule.
Which countries do you export to?
We export to refineries and buyers in the UAE, Europe, Asia, and other international markets. All exports are conducted under valid Kenyan export licences, with full customs documentation and secure armoured logistics from Nakodok to international cargo hub and onward internationally.
Can you provide assay certificates before payment?
Yes. Independent assay certificates from an accredited laboratory are issued before payment is requested. This is a standard part of our process - buyers receive full purity documentation before any financial commitment is required.
Do you supply copper, cobalt, or other 3T minerals?
Yes. Through our Uganda operations we source copper, cobalt, coltan (tantalum), tin, and wolfram. All 3T minerals come with ICGLR-compliant chain-of-custody documentation. Multi-mineral offtake bundles can be arranged to simplify your procurement from a single verified supplier.
How long does an export shipment take?
From order confirmation to departure from Nakodok typically takes 10-14 working days, including final assay, documentation preparation, export licencing, and customs clearance. Onward transit to destination is approximately 3-5 days by air freight.
Do you offer geological consulting or site assessment?
Yes. Our geological team conducts ground surveys, sampling, and mineral potential assessments for prospective mining sites in the Turkana and North-Western Kenya belt. We also advise on equipment, processing setup, and licensing for new artisanal mining operations.
Key Terms
Mining Glossary
Definitions of key terms used in artisanal mining, mineral trade, and responsible sourcing - useful for buyers, investors, and new mining partners.
A
ASM
Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining. Mining by individuals, groups, or cooperatives using simple equipment and methods rather than large-scale mechanised operations.
Assay
A chemical test performed on a mineral sample to determine its composition and purity. Gold is typically assayed by fire assay or XRF analysis.
Alluvial Gold
Gold found in loose sediment (gravel, sand) in or near rivers and streams, deposited by water erosion from primary hard-rock sources.
C
Cassiterite
The primary ore of tin (SnO₂), classified as a 3T mineral under conflict minerals regulations. Sourced in Uganda.
Chain of Custody
The documented sequence of custody, control, transfer, and analysis of a mineral from the point of extraction to final buyer.
Coltan
Informal name for columbite-tantalite, the ore from which tantalum and niobium are extracted. A 3T mineral subject to Dodd-Frank and ICGLR regulations.
Conflict Minerals
Minerals sourced from conflict-affected areas where proceeds may finance armed groups. Regulated under Dodd-Frank Section 1502 and EU Regulation 2017/821.
D
Doré Bar
A semi-pure alloy of gold and silver (and trace elements) produced by smelting at the mine site. Typical purity is 85-99%+ before final refining.
Due Diligence
The process of investigating and verifying a supply chain to identify and address conflict, human rights, and environmental risks - as defined by OECD Guidance.
F
Fire Assay
The standard method for determining gold or silver content in a sample by using heat to separate the precious metal from other materials.
Formalisation
The process by which informal or artisanal miners obtain legal recognition, licensing, and access to formal markets through regulatory compliance.
G
Grade
The concentration of a mineral in an ore body, typically expressed as grams per tonne (g/t) for gold. Higher grade = more mineral per unit of rock.
Gravity Separation
A mineral processing method using the difference in density between minerals and gangue (waste) to separate them - no chemicals required.
I
ICGLR
International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. An inter-governmental organisation that operates the Regional Certification Mechanism (RCM) for 3T minerals.
ITSCI
ITRI Tin Supply Chain Initiative - an industry programme providing bag-and-tag chain-of-custody systems for 3T minerals in the Great Lakes region.
L
LBMA
London Bullion Market Association - sets the global standard for gold and silver quality (Good Delivery bars) and responsible sourcing through its Responsible Sourcing Programme.
Leaching
A chemical process using solvents (typically cyanide or acid) to dissolve and extract metals from ore. Kanyagot does not use leaching - only gravity separation.
O
Offtake Agreement
A contract between a producer and a buyer to purchase all or a portion of a producer's output at agreed terms - price, volume, quality, and delivery schedule.
Ore
Rock or sediment from which a valuable mineral can be extracted profitably.
R
Refinery
A facility that processes raw or semi-refined metals (such as doré bars) into pure bullion or refined products. Gold refineries must meet LBMA or equivalent standards.
RMC
Responsible Minerals Council - an organisation providing audit programmes and tools for responsible mineral sourcing, including the Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP).
S
Sluice Box
A long, inclined trough used in alluvial gold mining to separate gold from gravel using flowing water and riffles that catch heavier gold particles.
Spot Price
The current market price for immediate delivery of a commodity, as quoted on exchanges such as the LBMA for gold or LME for base metals.
T
3T Minerals
Tin, Tantalum, and Tungsten (plus Gold) - the four minerals regulated under conflict minerals legislation (Dodd-Frank, EU Regulation, ICGLR RCM).
Tailings
Waste material remaining after valuable minerals have been extracted from ore during processing. Tailings may still contain recoverable mineral content.
Tantalum
A rare, hard metal (chemical symbol Ta) derived from coltan ore. Used in electronics, medical devices, and aerospace. A 3T conflict mineral.
Troy Ounce
The standard unit of weight used for precious metals. 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams. Distinct from the avoirdupois ounce (28.35g) used for everyday goods.
X
XRF
X-Ray Fluorescence - a non-destructive analytical technique used to determine the elemental composition of mineral samples. Commonly used alongside fire assay for gold verification.
Step-by-Step Guide
